ENGLAND STRIKE GOLD ….. and Silver!

English Schools’ Table Tennis Association teams took gold and silver and there were Individual medals for Connor Green and Adam Szabo in the annual Primary Schools’ International Championships hosted this year by the Table Tennis Association of Wales.

Teams from England, Guernsey, Ireland, Isle of Man and Scotland joined the host country for this event held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff from 7th/9th April 2017.

England Boys were represented by Connor Green (Chetwynd Primary Academy, Nottinghamshire), Harry Derecki (Ashburnham Community School, London Central), Toby Ellis (Great Wood Primary School, Lancashire) and Adam Szabo (St. Alban’s CE Primary School, South Yorkshire) – a strong squad looking to win back the title from 2016 holders Ireland.

Following straight 10-0 wins against Scotland, the Isle of Man and Guernsey and with a comfortable victory 8-2 over Wales, they faced Ireland in their final match.  From 0-2 down they fought back to 2-2, then lost both doubles matches which went to five games ending 12-14 and 10-12 respectively.  A tall order – they had to win the last four singles to take the title.  Szabo wins – match score 3-4; Green wins – 4-4, Ellis wins – 5-4 and Derecki wins – 6-4.  Victory!!

Final Places:  1st – England; 2nd – Ireland; 3rd – Wales.

Girls team (2)

The England Girls’ squad of Katie Bates (Bankfields Primary School, Cleveland), Lucy Gent (St. Bernadette’s Primary School, Cleveland), Anna Green (Chetwynd Primary Academy, Nottinghamshire) and Saskia Key (Amherst School, Kent) started in the same way as the boys with 10-0 victories over Scotland, Guernsey and the Isle of Man and a 7-3 win over Wales.  Current holders Ireland were not intent on losing their title with only Katie Bates winning a match for ESTTA.  Ireland’s Alannah O’Flynn and Sophie Early dominated the event – but England came away with a well earned set of silver medals.

Final  Places:  1st – Ireland; 2nd – England; 3rd – Wales.

The two days of team championships were followed by Individual events.

Boys’ Individual Results:  1st – Louie Evans (Wales); 2nd – Connor Green (England);

3rd – Adam Szabo (England) and Max Skelton (Ireland).

Girls’ Individual Results:  1st – Sophie Early (Ireland); 2nd – Anna Hursey (Wales);
